Three Postdoctoral Researcher Positions in Management Strategy Evaluation

A team of scientists at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI),
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science and
Technology (SMAST), and NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NOAA
NEFSC) are seeking applicants for three postdoctoral positions to
apply management strategy evaluation (MSE) to groundfish species in
the Northeast U.S. The research will focus on testing the performance
of management procedures under climate change. The postdocs will work
with a team of experts in the study of climate impacts on fish and
fisheries and the application of MSE, including Dr. Lisa Kerr and Dr.
Andrew Pershing (GMRI), Dr. Gavin Fay and Dr. Steve Cadrin (UMass
Dartmouth), and Dr. Sarah Gaichas (NOAA NEFSC). Two positions will be
based at GMRI (Portland, ME) and one based at UMass Dartmouth (New
Bedford, MA).

The scope of work will include the following:
--Developing relationships that describe climate impacts on population
processes.
--Constructing operating models to emulate population dynamics.
--Simulating models under climate change scenarios.
--Testing the performance of alternative stock assessment models.
--Apply alternative harvest strategies under climate change scenarios.
--Incorporating technical interactions as part of mixed fishery analysis
--Quantifying biological and economic tradeoffs.
--Stakeholder outreach

Qualifications

· A completed (or nearly-completed) PhD degree in a relevant
discipline, such as Fisheries Science, Statistics, Ecology, or other
related field that demonstrates a strong quantitative background.

· Experience fitting population dynamics models to data for
fisheries stock assessment and application of simulation testing
frameworks like Management Strategy Evaluation is preferred.

· Knowledge of fisheries management, and understanding of the
management process in the U.S.

· Demonstrated experience and fluency in statistical/modeling
programming languages (e.g. R, AD Model Builder, Template Model
Builder).

· Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced
through publications in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and
presentations to a variety of audiences

The positions have competitive annual salaries plus benefits. Start
date is flexible; the successful candidate could begin as early as
October 2017. The positions will range from 2-3 years in duration. To
be considered for all three positions, please submit application
materials through both links below.
