[ECOLOG-L] iButton temperature/humidity logger

2012-06-07 Thread Emily Atkinson
Hi, Has anyone used an iButton temperature/humidity logger specifically for soils? I'm looking into installing some at my field sites. Any recommendations/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! -- Emily E. Atkinson Department of Geography University of Wisconsin-Madison Email: eeatkin...@w

Hi Emily; My lab group has used iButton temperature sensors but we have not used humidity logging ones. We had a lot of success with the temperature loggers by securely wrapping them in parafilm before burying them in the soil. We found the moisture ruined the sensors and that parafilm was ef

Even in dry soil relative humidity of the air is near saturation so you won't see any biologically meaningful differences. I've used temperature iButtons for a number of years in vernal pools to measure water depth and up until 2.5 years ago they were pretty waterproof and robust. That has cha

It seems to me that you could just take two ibutton temp sensors, place one in a wet sleeve and one dry. The difference in temp recording would be the relative humidity. Malcolm On Thu, Jun 7, 2012 at 2:08 PM, Emily Atkinson wrote: > Hi, > > Has anyone used an iButton temperature/humidity logger

That is the purpose of a thermocouple psychrometer. Identify the characteristic you are really interested. If it has to do with soil water content of water potential go talk to a specialist. Sent from my iPhone On Jun 8, 2012, at 2:21 PM, malcolm McCallum wrote: > It seems to me that you co

Hi Emily, I did not use iButtons for soils directly, but attached them to Eastern Box Turtles which overwinter by burrowing into the soil. We dipped them twice in plasti dip prior to attaching them and did not lose a single button's data. Good luck! Amberly Moon Sent from my iPhone On Jun 7,

Hi Emily: As you know, hygrochrons have a humidity port that requires connectivity to air/soilso plasti-dip, and the like will not work as they do with thermochrons. I had success wrapping each hygrochron in Typar, secured in place with a small 4"
