BOTANY FIELD TECHNICIAN (Wayne National Forest) BOTANY and NATURAL RESOURCES MAJORS OR MINORS- This is a preliminary announcement for three, three-month 'biotech' positions with the US Forest Service, Wayne National Forest, Ohio for the 2006 summer season at the GS-5 ($13.58/hr), GS-4 ($12.14) and GS-3 ($10.82) levels. Pay grade will be offered based on education and/or level of experience. Housing is not provided but affordable housing can be found in Ironton, OH or Ashland, KY. Preferred start date is May 15th. Duties include: Assisting botanist in conducting surveys for non-native invasive plant species, threatened and endangered species and inventorying other vascular plant species (75%), using GPS and GIS to document locations of plants of interest (10%), entering data from surveys into databases (10%) and other tasks as assigned (5%). Qualifications: A course in vascular plant taxonomy and the ability to key plants to the species level is required. Courses in agrostology, orienteering (or experience in compass work, pacing and map reading) and dendrology would be beneficial. Past field-work and experience with database and GIS programs and GPS equipment would also be helpful. Must be willing to work alone in remote forest locations or with others in a team setting. Work may require travel between the three different units of the Wayne National Forest, and up to 2 weeks/month of overnight travel.
