The position is responsible for monitoring agricultural areas of the world, performing analysis, and presenting current season production forecasts and condition reports. Tools and data used in the position include satellite imagery data (mostly MODIS, SPOT, and some AVHRR, Landsat TM), normalized vegetation indexes, agro-meteorological crop models for hazard, winter kill, growth stage, etc. We use ESRI GIS ArcMap software, and in-house tools for extraction and display of extensive meteorology data. Not only that but we publish reports on the web, provide interesting briefings, work hard to design graphical representation of numeric data and concepts related to agriculture monitoring on national scale. The really good analysts design s/w, create new spreadsheet tools, GIS custom tools, statistical analyze weather station data, climate data, historical agricultural production data. Regularly read international news assessing validity and impact of information contained in agricultural and weather related stories. Stay in contact with overseas office. The main crops of concern are soybeans, canola, wheat, barley, corn, cotton, peanuts, and sorghum of the worlds major export/import countries.
