Position Announcement The Center for Marine Resource Studies South Caicos, Turks & Caicos Islands, BWI =20 =20 =20 Reports To: Center/Science Director =20 Position Summary: The core functions of this residential field position are to:=20 1) Teach the Economic & Ethical Issues in Sustainable Development course and one third of the summer course. Course based on critical, local environmental issues and problem-based interdisciplinary curriculum. 2) Lead designated components of the Center's Five-Year Research Plan and as part of this, oversee and advise the student directed research projects that relate to these research lines. =20 Course Overview: The Economic & Ethical Issues in Sustainable Development course is designed to assist students in identifying the societal changes that affect the use and management of natural resources in a rapidly developing community. The course will assist students in understanding the political, legal, economic, ethical and social pressures that are shaping the community and its attitudes toward its natural and human environment. =20 Issues to be addressed include: * History and culture of the TCI * TCI social and political systems * Assessing community economic development and micro-enterprise potential=20 * Anthropological and sociological aspects of community development * Tools and methods for socioeconomic feasibility * Environmental economics * Politics and processes of environmental regulation development * Techniques of ethnographic assessments * Globalization and free trade impact on the local and regional community * General statistics * Artisanal fisheries in the TCI * Interview techniques * Gender issues * Urbanization * Pollution impacts (terrestrial and marine) * Social justice and grass roots movements * Natural resource use * Activism * Ethics * Marine protected areas In addition, the roles of local people, government, and private, national, and bilateral aid agencies will be examined in the context of developing sustainable development models. The empowerment of local people in the creation of sustainable development techniques, including micro-enterprise development and strategies will be examined through the review of specific Case Studies. This course is based on a comprehensive approach that encompasses management, economics, policy, legal and social issues. The Economic & Ethical Issues in Sustainable Development faculty will work closely with our Tropical Marine Ecology, and Marine Resource Management faculty to deliver an inter-disciplinary program. The successful candidate will provide high quality, modern and experiential teaching in critical environmental issues in an interdisciplinary curriculum and participate fully in the implementation of the Center's multi-year research plan that addresses these issues. The publication of research results is critical. =20 Minimum Qualifications: * Ph.D. and University-level teaching experience in Environmental Policy, Socio-Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, Environmental/Ecological Economics, Community Development/Planning or similar field. * Extensive field research experience, preferably in the fields of Development Economics; cultural anthropology, ethnography, or sustainable community development. * Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary teaching and research team=20 * Good track record of research publications * Proven track record of grant writing success * Current first aid certification =20 Preferred Qualifications: * Demonstrated experience working in collaboration with small island governments * Demonstrated commitment to environmental issues * Residential student group management and risk management experience highly desirable =20 Start Date: January 2006 =20 Compensation and Benefits: 27,000 - 29,000 USD per year plus full room and board.
