Second call - February 2007: Graduate Student Research Assistantships for MSc available at the University of North Dakota, Department of Earth System Science and Policy Graduate Research Assistantships are available in the Department of Earth System Science and Policy at the University of North Dakota. The successful applicants would work with Dr Michael Hill on various aspects of analysis of remotely sensed data for application in environmental assessments and description of ecosystem services. Applications are encouraged from students with a background and interests in geography and ecology. However, applications are also encouraged from physical science students interested in application of basic science and mathematical skills and principles within the applied environmental domain. Students should be interested in the broader context and impacts of their research in keeping with the principles underlying earth system science. Quantitative skills and computer programming skills, or an interest in learning these skills would be an advantage. I am interested in students who would like to work on projects that analyse spatial and temporal patterns and signals in remote sensing data and want to use this information to describe properties of land systems for environmental assessments. Possible areas of work could include analysis of time series of satellite data, analysis of hyperspectral remote sensing over tropical savannas, land use/land cover change in the Red River valley, and global wilderness mapping. The successful candidates for these positions will work within a multidisciplinary team of faculty and students interested in the science and policy of environmental sustainability. All of these positions come with a 9-month GRA, full tuition waiver and funding for the appropriate period. For more information about these positions, please contact Dr Michael Hill (contact details below). Interested students should examine the Department website (http://www.essp.und.edu), contact Dr. Hill to discuss the and apply directly to the UND Graduate School (http://www.und.edu/dept/grad/) Please do **not** hit the reply button to respond to this email.
