First screening June 11, 2007.=09 Location: Olympia, WA=09 POSITION PROFILE This position provides skilled technical field and office support for research and monitoring efforts conducted under the WA DNR State Lands Habitat Conservation Plan Riparian Conservation Strategy and Riparian Forest Restoration Strategy. Research projects are focused primarily on the management of riparian forests and impacts to associated flora, fauna, and linkages to downstream systems. Duties include field data collection, data review, error proofing, and data management. Work is performed in a team setting, mainly in the field and occasionally in the office. The technician receives on-going direction from a supervisor to perform a wide variety of technical operations following established methodology and well-defined procedures. This position requires a high level of organizational skills. A background in the natural sciences is required, either through education or prior work experience. Experience with plant taxonomy is required. Basic GIS skills are desired. This position requires the technical skills common to field research, including: orienteering and surveying, standard forest measurements, plant identification, basic statistics, and maintenance of scientific equipment. Specific duties include: the location, installation, measurement, and maintenance of research plots; field data collection in riparian and upland zones; and the identification of understory and overstory vegetation using technical keys to determine vegetation abundance and distribution. Field measurements include species identification, damage assessment, tree diameters, relative density, basal area, trees per acre, and canopy closure. The technician will operate and maintain instruments and equipment, including a survey compass, diameter tape, measuring tape, stadia rod, GPS, PDA, spherical densitometer, digital camera, hemispherical lens, laser range finder, relaskop, and field installed data loggers. The technician is responsible for recording and compiling field collected data, collecting field data in an organized and legible manner, preparing data for archival, and surveying and reporting on field conditions. Office duties include data entry; the creation and/or maintenance of spreadsheets and databases; quality assurance of field data; formatting, proofing, and preparation of documents; and the creation of charts, graphs, tables and maps with supervision. The technician will operate a 4WD motor vehicle on unimproved roads, navigate unmarked road systems, and safely operate a vehicle in close proximity to active timber harvests. Field work is often performed in rugged terrain under a variety of weather conditions. REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS * Applicant must have general field experience with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail when collecting and managing data.=20 * Must be proficient with the identification of understory and overstory vegetation within western Washington. =20 DESIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS * Associate's or higher degree in forestry, biology, ecology, or related field. * Experience using GPS units and software, data collectors, and compass.=20 * Familiarity with Geographic Information System including ArcGIS. * Proficiency in MS Word and Excel. SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS * Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions. * This position may involve working long and irregular hours and extended travel for up to five consecutive days. =20 * The position requires the ability to drive on unimproved and unmarked roads, hike and navigate in rugged terrain and in all weather conditions. * The applicant will operate a motor vehicle as part of their duties and must have a valid driver's license with at least two years of driving experience. * Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
