Several things I would suggest:
1) Turn off external ALC in the K3. We recommend NOT using it with the KPA500
(or any other amp for that matter).
2) Run the test with the K3 connected to a power meter then a dummy load to see
if the problem persists. If so,
you probably need to recalibrate the

components into a K3s and have all current updates added to the K3. I will

The 6 meter rf amplifier will also be included. Unit is
Thanks all for all the suggestions!
Fred Cady privately suggested making sure my ALC and Mic gain are set
correctly. I tuned that some more, and it is a lot better, but still doesn't
immediately go to full power output.
I will test without KPA500 next.

Ed,
Whether the weighted knobs will cause pre-mature wear to the encoder
bearings is undetermined.
However, I would caution you to remove those heavy knobs before
transporting or shipping the K3. Any vertical bumps can cause the extra
weight to bend the encoder shaft and create "rough
I've been using a pair on my K3 since about 2011 and also have had a
pair installed on my K3S for just over a year now. Zero problems. The
tuning feel with the weighted knobs is wonderful. Go for it.

Before I install 73inc weighted knobs on my K3S, is anybody of the opinion that
these knobs cause long-term damage to the PTO shaft? These knobs are quite
heavy, compared to the factory ones.
Seems Elecraft used lightweight knobs for a reason.
Input appreciated.

All,
Thanks for your input and as a result I have several new ideas to

Hi,
How about following Vic, 4X6GP's advice and test the K3 without the KPA500
in circuit? Your symptoms are exactly as if the K3 TX calibration is badly
out of wack as he suggests. The fact that a band change makes it worse is a
dead give-away. A band change makes the K3's ALC algorithm reset

Fred, I have seen your great article on AGC version 4.51 on your web page.I

That's how W7RN does it. In fact, Gerry used W7RN for a recent demo.
Once your RRC-1258 is configured properly, you don't need a computer
unless you need to access station automation at the remote site too.

Yes to all. There's no question that something has changed within the
K3. 15 was always marginal, with higher current at 100W than the other
bands, but now the maximum current on 15 is lower than it used to be,
which makes me suspect the LPA module. When I recently did a new TxGain
Check software. I have noted my software switches sub-modes when making
changes. It has to do with mode selection and mapping softwre modes tot he
radio mode/sub-mode.

Hey Dick,
Why do you need TRX Manager or anything of the sort?
Just bring the K3/0, RemoteRig box and whatever internet connectivity you
need.
If you need to access a desktop for antenna or KPA500, use TeamViewer or
Remote Desktop, and access any automation applications locally in the shack.
That hasn’t helped my KPA500. I notice it particularly after a band change.

If the KPA500 utility connected to the KAT500, I think whoever at Elecraft
maintains the utility software needs to add some code to prevent that from
happening.

OK, I figured out what I did. Somehow I managed to use the KPA500
Utility to connect to my KAT500. It actually worked and downloaded the
KAT500 firmware and installed it. I was, of course, on a different
port, but I didn't pay close enough attention to the which unit was
using which port.
Make that KAT500 utility.

I am an occasional user of digital modes.
My K3 is conntected to my PCs via in-line-out cables.
Usually, I used PC speakers gain to about 50-75% of max, and Line level on
K3 was about 10 or so. ALC used to be 4 bars, with 5th bar flickering, or
lower.
Recently, I cannot setup line-in level as it
