After owning a K3 and P3 combo for several years, I put the P3SVGA (along
with a generic monitor and wireless keyboard) on my Xmas list a while
back... I had been perfectly happy with just the little P3 but the big
screen has exceeded all expectations for detail and responsiveness... In
addition,
Congratulations Michael! Headsets are very subjective and am glad Santa
brought one you like...
That said, others should also consider one of the RadioSport headsets. I
found mine not only comfortable but it also cleans up certain types of QRN,
and the sound is superb:

Nice document. But it would be interesting to augment the P3 section with a
feature comparison to the Icom. IMHO, the P3/SVGA a a natural component of
the K3S - not just an add-on option. Thanks!

I have a P3 and will be ordering the P3_SVGA. I assume this will NOT
support a wireless USB keyboard, but just thought I would confirm before
buying one... On the topic, any favorite keyboards I should consider - or
avoid? Thanks for your input!

No doubt, small, single-band QRP kits are a bunch of fun. (I still think
Dave Benson's Small Wonder Labs DSW-II is still one of the most innovative
designs - I have two.)
That said, they are no match for the K1 (or K2 now) when it comes to having
a "real radio."

I do not understand the general fear of working with SMT components. The
import hot air soldering stations are relatively cheap and easy-to-use. And
magnifiers are available -- even binocular microscopes start around $500 for
I guess my kids or XYL will dig it out and put it on the market with the rest
of my stuff one day... But man, until then, what a great QRP rig!! 4-band
K1 with ATU... a real, take-anywhere radio!!

I suggest you consider finding a good, used Drake R8 receiver on eBay. The
sound of AM HF broadcasts (yes, they are still there -- e.g., Radio Romania)
is second to none. And listening to SSB has it all over my K3 and other ham
transceivers from a fidelity viewpoint.

Perhaps this is discussed somewhere in the thread, but I am surprised by the
lack of Flex SDRs in the mix. I would have thought at least a few would be
there for PR, if no other reason.

Wow -- I kind of touched a nerve with the "big boy" reference! I recall this
term was used by Dave Benson in some of his SWL kit documentation. It
merely referred the reader to a stripped-down section of the instructions if
one wanted to bypass the lengthy, step-by-step narrative... My point is
I was reminded how capable the K1 is a couple weeks ago at a beach house at
Seabrook Island, SC... I broke away from family activities for just a
couple hours one night and made solid K1 DX QSOs with Ukraine, Sweden, Italy
and others using just a lightweight 20 meter dipole tied to the corner of

Hey Wayne, Not sure you were joking with that de-soldering process. As a
POS field tech during the early 70's, I had to troubleshoot and repair
generation-1 mini-computers to the component level in grocery stores.

My experience with AFX effects (without the second receiver) for CW is not

You should consider the JRC ST-3 headphones. I have used mine for about 15
years as an SWL and ham -- most recently with my new K3. I do not need to
adjust the volume when switching from speaker to headphones (except for the
CW sidetone) and the comfort and ability to hear both weak and strong

Wow -- to each their own, but after just a few weeks of operating a K3/P3
combo, I don't think I could ever go back to "audio only." To me, giving up
my P3 now would be like saying

Yes, I just assembled my P3 a few weeks ago and noticed that the BNC cable
ends had a very loose fit on both the P3 and K3 BNC connectors. Although I
did not experience a problem, I replaced it with a

One suggestion: you may want to consider the P3 (and if you really want the
big screen, include the P3SVGA) instead of the LP-PAN. I assembled the

Well, my K3/100 and P3 are now a whole week old! Had a great time assembling
and now having a blast getting to know them -- the P3 and the CW autospot
and APF features are favorites so far.

I hope I am not gushing, but the KX3 and 100w mini-amp are exactly the
direction I want to go in this great hobby. The combination of a PC-less SDR
and the ability to take the components into the field or to a beach house
scratches me right where I itch! My K1 has a big brother in it's future -
