If the LP-PAN window is fully visible and not covered up by other windows, I
find it hard to believe that the knob can beat the mouse. But, as is often
the case, my LP-PAN window is fully or partly hidden and I can believe the
extra click needed to bring it in focus might just be enough to lose
Wouldn't the ability to have the rig QSY just staring at the position on
the P3 screen be neat.

You shouldn't even have to go THAT far. The radio should be capable of fully
autonomous mode ... think of it as a Roomba sweeping up contacts for the
contest instead of just .. ahhh ... dirt. Bouncing off of and changing
