I have an Elecraft W1 wattmeter/swr meter installed outboard of the K1's
antenna jack (i.e., between the antenna jack and the antenna). I have the KAT1
Internal Automatic Antenna Tuner installed.

When I put the radio in tune mode, the W1 shows an appropriately low power
output, and continues to show that low power output until the ATU is finished
tuning. As soon as the ATU is finished tuning, the displayed power on the W1
jumps to about 14 watts and stays there until I take the K1 out of tune mode.
After that, the W1 will show an appropriate power level when I'm transmitting
(4-5 watts, depending on my setting). This happens when I'm on the power mains
or using the internal battery (KBT1). Since I managed to operate for 5 hours
on battery during Field Day, I suspect that I'm getting the proper power out of
the K1 (I had it set to 3 watts for battery operation).

I doubt the 14 watt reading because the power supply I'm using isn't capable of
supplying that kind of power.

Be that as it may, three questions:

1. Is there anything wrong with the K1?

2. What would cause that kind of reading on the W1?

3. Is it anything that would damage the radio?

Thanks

Jon
