I thought there were two settings for the preamp? Like a 1 and 2? I have
the new synth boards.

That's not a function of the synth boards. It's a function of
the KXV3B. KXV3 had no preamp, KXV3A added support for the
internal transverter and KXV3B integrated the second preamp
for 18 MHz and up.

I'm probably too late for this, but does anyone remember all the
upgrades that you could make to the K3? The one I'm really interested in
is the 10M/6M preamp.
I can't seem to find it on the "preorder" list so I'm guessing it's
probably going to be hard to find, but does anyone remember what it

nonexistent and local activity is extremely sparse. It means you hear lots
of weak stations, most of which you have little chance of working unless you
have good antennas and run power. So preamp is a plus in receive but it

Not disagreeing. I bought my K3, SN4043, in 2010. It has an
internal preamp (push PRE) which gives about 10-dB gain (I
think). A few years went by and Elecraft announced the PR6 external
"add-on" preamp to improve 10m and 6m receiver performance. They
kind of admitted the bare K3

here,
Mine is not a PR6 but equivalent in NF and gain specs. I
re-installed it after replacing the GasFet (mgf-1402) which somehow
bit the dust awhile ago. It is installed on the K3 RX IN/OUT same as
one does the PR6.
I measured increase of my K3 6m MDS from -136 to -145 dBm using my
XG3 and
From some preliminary tests, it appears that neither the preamp or the
attenuator of my K3 operate when the RX antenna is selected. Is this
correct/intended/selectable?

The schematics available on the Elecraft web site show the attenuator
and preamp are located after the RX Ant switch. I've just checked and
the Preamp/RX Ant selections are stored separately for the main and RX
antennas.

According to the schematic, the preamp gain is 11 dB. Roughly 2

Fred,
The real answer depends on your antenna system, and not on the gain of
the preamp.
You should try each band with the preamp off and then on. If attaching
the antenna results in an increase in received noise, you have the K3
set for the best usable sensitivity. If that condition is
