Tnx Jim. One of my first thoughts was with the amplifier. But we had no
issues with K9RS's K3. Also, I was able to hear these clicks running
barefoot even with the power in the K3 turned down to 0 watts. Of course,
my transmit and receive antennas are pretty close together.
Right now, I feel

Hmmm. I've never heard of a K3 causing clicks, but I guess it might if
something broke. Don't rule out amplifier bias as the cause of the
problem at W2GD. W8JI
This past weekend, I took my K3 (SN 1428) to the W2GD 160M Contest station in
West Creek, NJ where we used it as the run station. We used another K3 for the
mult station. Both were connected through an Acom lockout box to the same
amplifier and antennas. Following the contest, I received an

To confirm what Geoff said, if your antenna has some kind of diodic
contact, then the arc-over at the beginning of each baud, and the cessation
of arc at the end, will create beautifilous klix mostly heard by
locals. Having
a jumpy SWR is not good.

Bill,
The clicks which your neighbour heard could have been caused by something in
your antenna or feeder arcing over, or possibly an intermittent
contact.I note that you said that sometimes your Cushcraft vertical "has
high SWR spikes", which suggests that something in your feeder or antenna
Also note that the Blocking Dynamic Range of the FT-5000 is approximately 13-15
dB worse than the K3's, as per the Sherwood and ARRL lab test data. That mean
his rx will desense on much weaker local signals than the K3.

I am currently operating barefoot at my new-ish (moved here one year ago) QTH
in Glade Park CO with a K3 and a Cushcraft vertical antenna. (Much nicer
antennas going up in the next few weeks and more power once I get 220V to the
shack).
I have a neighbor, Jerry K0DU, who lives about 4 miles aw
Please see the occupied spectrum plots of the ARRL Lab tests in QST for
the radios in question.
It can be very informative to compare the plots of various radios.
You may be surprised by what you find. Or maybe not :-)

PS - while you're at it, look at the broadband Tx noise...

If you have one of these new fangled digital 'scope that takes a USB memory
If you’re a ARRL member you can see a scope output in the K3 review on line.
They called it out standing.

OK, this has been bashed about pretty good. So my question is: if someone puts
a spectrum analyzer on the CW output of a K3, are key clicks detectable? On
make, on break? Close in, far out, in between? If they exist, what is the
level of the click relative to the signal? If they exist, are
I have noticed the same thing, if I am understanding you correctly:
The "key click" sound in the audio is generated by your own keying;
It is present even if the K3 is in TEST mode.
It is evident only if the AF gain is turned up; otherwise, sidetone sounds
fine when receiver AF gain is at mini
tting
clicks with a K3.

I was hunting around for some action today on the 20 meter band with CW. Did
not find anything but I discovered an unusual key click which I am not sure if
it is a real key click or not or maybe just some artifact of the sidetone
monitor.
Since I was looking for stations, I was playing with th
Lee,
It is entirely possible for a station with bad key clicks to produce
energy for 2 kHz or more either side of the carrier, so the increased
sensitivity of the K3 may allow you to hear those keyclicks as signals
(they really are signals) even though you have the filters tightened up

Check that you
Check that you have the menu item "AGC PLS" set to "nor" (the default),
the K3 AGC overreacts to electrical pulses (such as switching on a
light) if that item is set to "OFF". The same might occur with stations
radiating key clicks.

Has anyone else noticed the K3 seems very susceptible to received stations
with key clicks? If the station is strong, I can hear the clicks 2 khz away
even with the 400 hz filter in line and DSP even narrower. No help from NR
or NB. No big deal, but I've noted this several times.
