Just received a KPA 500 and KAT 500 yesterday. Using them with my Icom
7300. I know the manual says to expect some hum from the KPA 500 but I
believe mine is more than a hum. When I send CW I don't need to monitor
the radio side tone. I just have to listen to the amp. :-) Anyone else

Last week i assembled the kpa500 of oe6rdd
when we transmit we hear a realy loud hum (50hz) in the rythm of the cw signals
i have compared this with my own kpa-500 and there is no hum
i have tried to loosen the big srew which holds the tranformer with no result
any ideas ??

You may not have the transformer properly tightened down. Recheck it.
Also, 58V is not that bad, but you might want to recheck that you are using the
proper tap
from the transformer. You just might want to go up a notch to get a higher
voltage. Essentially
you want the tap that provides the high
Klaus,
Are you sure it is the KPA500?

The same hum here since I changed to the *RED TAP (211 to 230V).*
I had _no hum with the YELLOW TAP (231 to 250 V)_. But then I had less
than 60V with full power.
The hum is coming out of the KPA500.
What to do?

I too have noticed a hum emanating from the KPA500 (#26), but the
circumstances are a bit strange. The hum comes sometimes when the KPA500 is
off. By that I mean it is powered down (front panel power switch is off..no
leds are lit), but not removed from the AC outlet. If I flip the rocker
switch on
Hi
I took part in IOTA contest at the weekend in the unassisted category, CW, high
power.
The KPA-500 was used for the first full 24hrs contest here with M3i call-sign
and I did give it a darn good work-out end result performance was just fab.
No hang-ups, instant power, band change, big pile-ups
When the back panel switch is on, the low voltage power supply for the
front panel is still on, allowing the microprocessor to read the front
panel 'power' switch and talk over RS-232. A low level of power supply
hum from this small transformer is totally normal in this case. Of
course, turnig

One clarification to my last post.
It is important that users power off the KPA500 using the front panel
power switch before killing power with the rear panel switch.
If you only use the rear panel power switch for main power then any
changed parameters (including last band) will not be saved a
Hi Eric
Thanks for the email.
It's not a problem. really. In fact
I'm now seriously thinking of buying a 2nd kpa500 amp for SO2R!

Alternatively, Ken, you could operate your second KPA500 in parallel to

Correct - a 'Radio' is really a receiver. Perhaps he meant SO2T -
'Single Operator, Two Transceivers'
The use of the word 'Radio' to mean 'Transceiver' migrated from the
world of CB :-( In amateur radio we always used to refer to our
equipment as a rig or a transceiver. But the CB world has a

The hum is due to magnetic field in close proximity of the speaker...usually.
Sometimes RF gets into them usually on the power cord. Ferrite fixes this,
moving the speakers fixes the former.

RFI problems with the computer speakers are generally due to the
absence of the bypass components recommended by the amplifier chip
designers. I have seen several inexpensive computer speakers with
holes for the bypass caps on the circuit board (the chip maker's
reference design) but no parts. G

Klaus,
I know you've already contacted Elecraft Support about this. Right?
If you have not, you will have a good deal more success contacting them, since
they have probably already seen this before and know what to look for.
