Hello Mike and others, IMHO, ATU is nearly a must.  While we can have a well matched antenna, the ATU serves two purposes: 1. a preselector gives some sort of improvement in selectivity under strong out band QRM; 2. for whatever reasons there are something wrong with the 'well matched' antenna,
