I would be reluctant to run it about the maximum recommended voltage.
It is just a guess, but I think it may be OK if you always have a low
SWR, but as the SWR increases, the voltages in the PA output circuit can
increase dramatically and the capacitors in there do not have a lot of
margin
I've been running my KX1 from home with the nomal 13.8 v and get right at 3
watts out. When I put 14.9 v (max output from the pwr supply), I'll get 4.1
watts out of the KX1.
A 1 watt increase, not a lot of difference I know, but every little bit helps.

Not at all. Both the batteries and the external power source have
isolation diodes.
The KX1 will draw power from the source having the greater voltage level.
