A quickie: wanna take it on a hike. Got my wire. Got the ATU. Charging up the
batteries. Operating SSB QRP @ 5 watts (maybe less), how long would you expect
the batteries to last? Operating CW same?

I’ve recently become interested in portable operating with my KX3. I’m using
the Panasonic Enloop NiMH batteries. I find that the batteries last for less
than 2 hrs. Should I expect longer battery life. I just charged them on the
external Panasonic charge and confirmed post charge voltage >1.3
Thanks Don, Indeed the Low Bat was set at 10. I moved it to 8.5. And I’m using
the Black Enloop Pro batteries.

If you use SSB, and power consumption is a concern, you’re better off running
at 3W, since a more efficient output transformer winding is selected, reducing
transmit current consumption. For CW, you can run up to 5W in this
power-saving mode. You can tell if the hi-Z winding is selected looking
I don't have a KX3, but using my K2/10 @ 5W on CW, I've managed steady
operating for at least 2 hrs with an A123 4S1P LiFePO4 rated at 3.5 Ah
and I've never depleted the battery. I believe the KX3 is a bit more
efficient than the K2. I also believe if you restrict the power to
2.5W, the KX3 uses
going to be
there for a couple of days.

Matt,
Excellent hint.
You'll find you will NOT need one of the after market or Elecraft
heatsinks either unless already operating in 40'C.

Tom,
It sounds like you may not have set the menu BAT MIN to 8.5 volts as
recommended for NiMH batteries. The default before BAT LOW is displayed
is 10 volts. 8 NiMH batteries will discharge quickly to below that 10
volt level, but the time between 10 volts and 8.5 volts will be much
greate
The Eneloop batteries are great.

I like to hike in areas where 2m is mostly useless. The weight I can carry
is extremely limited, and the KX1 is about right. Hiking is slow and it
takes time to get anywhere. Cooking and other tasks take time. I seldom have
more than one hour to operate after everything else is done, including
