Lee, glad you got it sorted. Just a note - don't ever use a drill on through-plated holes - you will probably remove the 'plating' and disconnect the 2 sides - not so much a problem if it's just a double-sided board, you can solder each side (unless one side has a protective coat). But on

Lee, One thing that I have found works well for removing solder quickly and 'cleanly' is inertia.. I place a small bit of scrap carpet on the edge of my workbench to act as a PCB stop pad, so as not to damage the board. Add a little solder to the thru hole you are working on until it bridges
