To all who offered suggestions:
Thanks for the hints. The problem still exists (checksum error on
the P3 screen after attempting to upgrade to firmware 1.24.) I believe
I have established it is not a communications problem with the help of
Alan, N1AL. The firmware is sent to the P3 in 133 byte blocks, and
after each block is successfully received, it sends back to the computer:
Response "A"
This indicates the block has been successfully received. I was able
to capture the transfer using the Trace function on the View Tab of the
Elecraft P3 Utility. The problem appears to be at the conclusion of the
transfer when the program times out on what appears to be a lack of
response by the P3.
I have sent a capture of the entire data transfer to Alan, N1AL and also
tho the experts at Elecraft. We'll see were we go from there. I wanted
to update the group that it is not a serial port or USB mixup, as that
was suggested by several users and it made sense. It now appears it
goes beyond simple communications (same symptoms with two physically
different COM ports and trying to load either firmware version 1.20 or
1.24.)
When this is resolved, I'll let everyone know what the problem was
in case someone else encounters it.
