There are a couple of tips with regard to using the K3 on data modes:

1. The K3 understands Kenwood "TX/RX" commands via the normal RS232 serial lead, so in many cases you don't need a dedicated PTT lead for data (works in HRD/DM780 and MMTTY, not sure about others). 2. If you use Data A and select the line input on the rear panel, the mic sockets can be left alone for SSB use with a microphone and also I think the TX Eq is bypassed on Data A.

I find the K3 is remarkably simple to use on data modes, having built in line transformers and understanding Kenwood commands means you don't need any external interface for RTTY, MFSK, Olivia, etc. One RS232 serial lead and a pair of 3.5mm terminated audio leads to/from your sound card are all that are needed, off the shelf 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo leads work fine.
