I am ordering a P3 today and would like to consider ordering a second KXUSB
as a backup because I have nightmares that my cable might fail and I will be
left without a hookup at a critical moment.

I did not see a response to your question on the reflector.
The answer is NO.
The P3 takes a regular DE-9 connector (as found on most USB to serial
adapters) while the KX3, XG3 and KAT500 take a 3.5mm stereo plug
carrying only TXD and RXD and signal ground

Further; the adapter cable for use with the K3/P3 is the KUSB, not KXUSB.
It's not completely clear what Scott was planning to interchange. If
it's really a KXUSB (for use with something other than the P3), I
believe that the 'a' on "KXUSBa" just means that it's a
separate/"extra" item (not bundle
too clear!
