I received my call sign from FCC yesterday( KI4NGH) for my new General license - a big deal for this 63 year old. I got the old vhf mic to work using the 10k resistor from the 5 volt source to the AFF line on the mic, and was able to do a qso on 7 watts on this morning's waterway net from here in Marathon FL to Saint Augustine. Antenna is 50 feet of #12 strung about the upper deck of our boat horizontally in the form of a "J" and fd from one end theough an MFJ tuner - KAT100 not built yet. Ground was two 3/4" copper pipes lying on the lower deck which will become the spine of the grounding system in the bilge.

Many thanks to the people who answered my many questions in the year leading up to this morning. I can see that this is going to be a wonderful thing and am really delighted with my K2. I could echo the remarks from Mr Benoit - I agree completely - a great kit and intelligently staged so you can test in-progress work and not wait until you've really messed it up.

Looks like I only made 3 mistakes one of which was caught on visual inspection (reversed IC) and the other 2 after it wouldn't work - parts left out and reversed diode. I'm now winding torroids for the KAP100. I enjoy doing anything where the results have some connection with the effort and I must say that I feel this way about the torroids. Also, when you tell someone you built a K2, the first question is "Did you do your own torroids?" Why pass up a chance to gloat?

Thanks again to you all,

73 (at last) John KI4NGH
