With a technician license you will be band limited. You get mostly CW on the
HF bands, and some voice on 10 meters. Probably you will start out on
VHF/UHF. I would therefore suggest a combination 2 meter/440 MHz FM
transceiver. It could be hand held if you want but that would be lower power
