For me, 1 KHz bandpass for voice is unreadable. If the filter is very, very bad and the signal very strong, enough stuff outside of the 1 kHz bandpass might slip through to make it intelligible, but it's not as readable as a wider bandwidth along with the increased noise the wider bandwidth admit

First of all, the crystal filter has nothing to do with trying different bandwidths. The DSP provides complete flexibility, including 1 kHz with the stock 2.7 kHz crystal roofing filter. But, yes, I've operated at a 1 kHz RX bandwidth on SSB, 400-1400 Hz. The intelligibility was much better than
