While slightly more expensive, I bought a crappie (the fish, not the adjective) pole from Cabelas for $10.00.

Sand spikes are easily made of PVC. Cut one end at 45 degrees. The other end can be slightly flared by heating on a gas grill and forcing heated over a wine bottle. A protruding stainless steel bolt placed at right angles to the tube can be used as a foot rest to drive the spike in the ground.
