Let's see what the emacs devs have to say about it.

options?
If you think this is not an issue with org-mode, maybe I/we could forward this
to the pp-maintainers, as it's in emacs core possibly to emacs-devel? I think
at least a warning in the variable documentation about performance hits might
have been helpful.

Oh nice, should pay more attention to worg. I h
tasks, notes and journalling-type entries, not for
long-form writing. But as a letters are usually short and writting in one
session, capture-templates seem a good fit.

Hello Colin,
This is amazing. I have run into exactly the same problem. I was
wondering whether to report it!
Oh, and I can reproduce the bug with your ECM.
Glad that I'm not alone. When you say you ran into this, is this
something that appeared to you in a recent org-version for
existing c
ings. Maybe I could do
something like a hydra menu with some small elisp-code, but I just
thought using the existing capture-functionality should be
simplest.
Below is my emacs and org configuration from
`org-submit-bug-report' from my `emacs -q' sess
let*
with something else like a normal let*, but I'm not confident
enough in my lisp to do this by myself.
Best regards,
Michael Eliachevitch
