In fairness, the formula for the default template is given in the description
of the function and is, therefore, in the information when the user looks for
help on how to customize this variable. There is also a reasonably good
example, though not the exact same template, in the info file. So
I totally understand this point of view. But I have to tell you that I found
the refile command to be totally useless when I first started using org-mode.
It was almost a year before I figured out that this variable had to be
customized to make it useful.

usually just enter latex mode (esc-x latex-mode). This allows me to use auctex
as well.
Of course, you have to switch back to org-mode after editing. So its not a
great solution if you are switching ba
