Should it be possible to put a footnote immediately after an
/emphasised/ word, as in the following example?
test.org **
Hello /girls/[fn:1], how do you do?
* Footnotes
[fn:1] There were no boys in the room...

It isn't related to the exporter. There is a limited set of charaters
allowed just after an emphasis marker, and ] doesn't belong, by
default, to them.
You may want to tweak the post part of
`org-emphasis-regexp-components'.
