I've written an humane colour theme for Emacs, which can be found here:

It's somewhat a work in progress (needs Gnus colours), but is usable now.

Done. There are actually two themes here, one dark and one medium in
brightness. These probably only work well on relatively high-contrast
LCD or similar flat panels.
