We currently have an opening in our Safety, Compliance & Sustainability
organization seeking qualified candidates for a Senior (Director Level)
Product Safety Engineer for safety design review, analysis and
verification of Microsoft hardware products. This position will work
cross-functionally with a diverse cross-section of Microsoft business
groups including design and software development teams, Legal, Quality,
Reliability, Supply Chain Operations and Manufacturing to ensure the
safety of our products.
Required Management Skills/Abilities Technical Skills/Knowledge:
- Expertise with Risk Assessment and Hazard Based Safety Engineering
with understanding of product safety lifecycle, including system failure
analysis methodologies such as Fault Tree, or Failure Mode and Effects
Analysis (FMEA).
- Demonstrated ability with quality, Design for Experiment, and/or Six
Sigma methodologies.
- Identify, assess and/or develop product safety technologies including
inherent fail safes that innovate and meet defined safety risk levels.
- Understand material characteristics as they apply to safety critical
performance and familiarity with other physical disciplines such as
mechanical or chemical engineering.
- Deep knowledge of high reliability and/or power circuitry design and
potential ignition sources.
- Establish scientific test processes to support safety requirements.
- Understand and clearly communicate mechanisms of safety failures
- Viewed as a program expert and is proactively sought out for as such
by development team
Industry Skills/Knowledge:
- Interface with standards bodies, certification bodies, and industry
groups on international standards and safety engineering best practices
development.
- Anticipate future complex products/feature areas or releases and
relationship to potential safety, rather than primarily focusing on
present complex products/feature areas
- Create positive brand equity for Microsoft through publication of
papers and leadership in product safety organizations.
Process and Management Skills/Knowledge:
- Provide clear direction on company and group product safety initiatives.
- Oversee product safety related field campaigns and recalls
- Draft safety-related guidelines and specifications
- Handle multiple design issues simultaneously with attention to detail
and facts.
- Train engineering and manufacturing teams and management regarding
safety design issues with supporting details on requirements.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with engineering development
and compliance engineering teams, legal department and management.
- Demonstrate effective presentation and communication skills regarding
complex technical issues in front of executives and peers.
- Provide litigation assistance including case preparation and strategy
support, as well as execution of company defense strategies, including
deposition and trial testimony.
The following minimum experience and education:
- Bachelors/Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- 12+ years industry work experience including involvement in the new
product development process, experience leading and coordinating
projects, and proven track record of developing successful products on
time.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
- Professional Engineer certification preferred
