I can't agree more. It has been awhile since my undergrad days but the
closest reference to product safety and standards I ever came across in
my studies was in an Engineering Practice course. The course mostly
covered engineering law (torts and contracts), product liability,

computer
manufacturer and for my final year and a half chose to work in product
safety.
At the end of the apprenticeship I de
h the academic institutions, as I know that they have a
lot of involvement in setting course sylabusses and accrediting degrees.
