Dear Charles,

Your Radio product has to meet the Japanese requirements laid down in
the Japanese Ordonance. 802.11a Wireless tests according to Japanese
radio regulation requirments "Ordonance 49.20 sub paragraph 3"
802.11b,g Wireless tests according to Japanese radio regulation
requirments "Ordonance 49.20 sub paragraph 1"
Covering channel 1~13 + 14.

As you already mentioned VCCI is voluntary but it is a Japanese custom
to have it.

As long as the level stays below 20mW no EM field exposure requirements
have to be met.

Please contact me of line in case you need more information about
Japanese approvals.

With Kind Regards,

Henry Rutjes

Subject: Japanese approvals requirements for fixed wireless equipment

All

Can anyone confirm/improve my understanding of what is required for a
WiMax radio basestation and subscriber terminal?

I understand the following are required:

Radio - Telec Type Certification

Safety - these products are not "Specific Electrical Appliances" nor
"Electrical Appliances other than the Specific Electrical Appliances"
as defined in Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law ("DENAN")
therefore no Japanese safety approval is required. The products will
however be compliant with IEC60950.

EMC - my client's major customer has not specifed VCCI approval - as its
"voluntary" is it required by customs for example?

EM field exposure - are there any Japanese requirements similar to EN
50385?

regards
Charlie
