If I recall correctly the TWA-800 crash investigation included analysis of the tubular fuel sensors described in another post here (8 feet long I think) and the possibility of them becoming an ignition source should a power cross occur.
The investigation seemed to conclude that the source of ignition in the central fuel tank could not be proven, however that whole region was revealed to combine electrical wiring, fuel, hot engine bleed air and hot AC plant exhaust in a nightmarish combination. The design of mechanical supports for wire bundles came under scrutiny, and the degradation of insulation over time due to vibration, heat and tricky maintenance procedures. It makes fascinating reading. At the time of the investigation I believe it was CSpan TV which carried the committee sessions live or same day. I recall noticing the testimony of one particular accident investigation engineer who had been involved in the collection and storage of the plane wreckage and his descriptions of irrational behavior by FBI people, in particular the local supervisor. It was clear the man had been traumatized by the FBI 's emotional contributions which had been so overwhelming he had difficulty delivering his factual report of the events to the inquiry. I'll never forget it. Such was the contrast between the needs for calm evidence based engineering assessment on the one hand and the FBI presumption of terrorist culpability on the other it made an indelible memory of how fragile the truth can be and how vulnerable it is to distortion by those with an agenda. Scary.
