It looks to me like Ian and John are talking about two different things. A stepping motor is usually used to drive an axis. On these types of machines an axis has limits. An axis such as x,y, or z can not be programed to free run. I my opinion if you want to free run a stepping motor then try usi

I have stepper drivers, but I don't have their configuration, so I tested them. They worked perfectly at 8 kHz, but on frequency bigger then 9 kHz they just don't react. 8 kHz is really enough for me, but there is problem with EMC because in stepconf maximum allowed value for step time is 50 000ns,
