I have found a work around - I add a small value to the result so that the timer value is never set to zero. That has solved the problem. %TM0.P = 16*(%IW1 - %IW0) + 1 and has no significant effect on the functioning of the toolchanger. It now works fine and one can select any one of 6 tools (btw it is a EMCO Compact 5 CNC toolchanger, if anybody is interested.
