I tried to use the utility Gdepth downloaded from this page:

It worked nice withe the 2.1.6 version of EMC2 (installed).
Now I tried it with the 2.2.2 and I get this error:
spiral.ngc:0: Bad character 'g' used
this is the original spiral.ngc file

from the link you provided:
... It is reported not to work with emc 2.2.
(Of course, this could have been added right before I looked at
it.)
