Maybe WiFi for network connectivity to the outside world.I find WiFi is
fast enough that I can NFS mount my files from a server and not have to
store them locally on the Pi.

I suppose it's not all that creative, but Mesa sells a rPi motherboard
which takes smart serial and 25 pin daughter cards. It seems like an
attractive option.
