FWIW I have the same problem, and no solution. I used to run EMC2
remotely on my Mac using SSH, but no longer can using AXIS (it works
fine with tkemc).
I can run gedit remotely (which is very useful for editing system
files below the share level) and some other applications, so my
impression is

It is, but its nvidia's according to glxinfo. Changing to tkemc makes it
work but no backplot, and IIRC
