I noticed eesh doesn't have an option to get a window's layer. Did I
miss it? Anyway, this patch lets you do
win_op layer ?
like you can do with desktop, move, or resize.

This (a related?) problem was up on e-users recently. (g)mplayer does
stupid things like sending menus to layer 0. This may be an mplayer
configuration thing. If it messes with the layers for other windows
something is seriously broken.
