i looked into this to see if i could make a patch but the X
communication/event handling is beyond me ;)
how easy would it be to make shortcuts for the window id's ?

I would say that assumption is not accurate (I have no RH8 or
RH9 to check with so I do not know whether they do or not).
On Redhat 9, Xsession is in /etc/X11/xdm/ if this helps...
