Personally, I am using latest master and, although it is true that the
default display is rather empty, I am able to run an EFL client in
Enlightenment as a Wayland composior, as this :
$ export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp
$ enlightenment_start
$ export ECORE_EVAS_ENGINE=wayland_shm
$ export
https://git.enlightenment.org/core/enlightenment.git/tree/README.wayland
https://phab.enlightenment.org/w/wayland/

All i get with enligthenment_start is that screen blinks and jitters few
times and nothing much happens, although I managed to get a glimpse of
something resembling a desktop every so often when swithcing terminals
