1st: thanks for all the good hints
2nd: I figured out the very best way to run enlightenment & gnome is
this:
Run enlightenment and in the .xinitrc file run "gnome-panel&"
That is the only really clean way to do it.
Unfortunately this has a drawback: the gnome-panel is NIT(!) sticky.
