There are some themes that exist for both KDE (qt based) and Gnome (gtk
based), like Plastik/Plastig.
An other way would be to use gtk-

Yes, you can get an application like trayer to do the job just fine.
What exactly do you mean by that?
install the application called "trayer" or one like it...
