I had the exact same problem. On my system all I had to do was move the
e17 directories to the start of my PATH statement. On my system (Arch
Linux) it is loaded at startup by /etc/profile and the statement I
modified was this;
export
PATH="/opt/e17/bin:/opt/e17/lib:/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/u
I hope they work, never made diffs before :)
If I set offset, the progressbar in ewl_test grows much faster (with
bigger steps), so I left it alone.

You've to use a file manager that is capable of drawing on the window
managers background, e.g. ROX-Filer or Nautilus. Last time I checked
with ROX-Filer it wanted to take charge of the backdrop, too, but I
don't know if this can be turned off.
