Hi all, Don't know how many will be interested, but wanted to report success here.
My current work desktop (besides my SunRay 1G) is an Ultra 20 with an NVidia board in it. Currently running Solaris Nevada build 41. I saw the announcement for the latest e16 build, and decided to give it a try with Composite, to see how well Solaris can handle it. And I must say I've been happily surprised =O) The last time I played with Composite was over a year ago on JDS3/Linux with a very old NVidia Geforce 256 card in an old DELL (800Mhz processor). And it was horribly unstable, crashing the X server very regularly. So I wasn't expecting much, and the beauty and stability I'm seeing here has blown me away. Anyway - first what I did. I installed the Composite libraries on top of the standard Solaris install by downloading them from http://dld.nsug.or.jp/xoops/modules/mydownloads/ (the NSUGxorg-addon-xorg-addon-1.0-i386-5.10-pkg.zip file) and following the instructions to edit my xorg.conf. I then grabbed the latest imlib2 and e16 files from sourceforge and built them. imlib2 build without problem, but I kept getting compile errors from e16. This required two fixes: Adding -I/usr/X11/include to the X_CFLAGS in src/Makefile (best done in the configure run, but not how I did it). And hacking /usr/openwin/include/X11/extensions/shape.h to add the following lines under the #define _SHAPE_H_ : #ifndef CARD32 #include <X11/Xutil.h> #endif With that done, e16 compiled and installed perfectly, and I'm now seeing drop shadows, transparency, fades and all on menu and windows. Other than switching Composite on in the menu, the only other changes I've made to my config are in "Move & Resize Settings", changing my Move Method to Opaque from Translucent, to make proper use of the fade and transparency effect provided there using Composite. With Translucent set, it was actually not as nice (though still worked as expected - I just realised I was missing something when I resized a window.) I've also switched off the iconisation animation now, as compared to everything else it looks old fashioned ;O) Oh, and the Pager Zoom in option is now back on, as it's *so* much nicer now. Live Update works a treat. So, with Transparency also on in my Gnome menu (this build of Nevada has Gnome 2.14 in - I'll be switching to a 2.16 build in a week or 3), I'm looking at one gorgeous desktop =O) Many thanks once again, Kim =O) Mark. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more?
