Worked like a charm except directory /opt/e17/usr/share/xsessions/ was not
there but /opt/e17/share/xsessions/ was. I copied the old enlightenment destop
over the new one in the directory you specified and everything worked correctly
afterwards.

Sorry, I misread your post. It seems you are using some other script
(and not easy_e17). In this case, either do the same thing but copy the
file from the prefix to which you installed e17. In case, you installed
e17 to /, then try reinstalling e, since that will reinstall the
enlightenment.des
Just copy or symlink the
/opt/e17/usr/share/xsessions/enlightenment.desktop to
/usr/share/xsessions and it should be working fine.

I was running enlightenment on ubuntu 12.04. I had installed using the e17_svn
script and all was going well until the ubuntu update manager prompted me that
there were updates. I performed the updates and after rebooting the
enlightenment choice on the login menu has disappeared.
