I appear to be missing something on my system and I'm not getting thumbnails
from certain video types (mp4).
Is there any way I can run by hand the generation tool and get some sort of
output that would help me figure out what's missing ?

it is. You need to have comp ("Composite" in the modules menu) and
comp-scale ("Scale Windows") modules enabled and then create an edge
binding for the scaling feature (unless one is set by default, I don't
remember that).

I managed to set things up so that I can switch from one window to the
next, as suggested by the first responder. It works as far as I can see,
but what I'd love to see all my windows at once on the screen, and then
click on one to select it.

You need the compositing and comp-scale modules loaded. Then you want to
trigger 'scale windows' - this will give you the desired effect.
