I am less of an extremist, you may want to play with Focus, disabling all of
them.
Trough the bindings file, you can have your menu at-a-key; I don't see how you
could pre-define
where it would pop though...

Works equally good with e16 on Sony Laptop with Dapper
Both Alsa, different soundcards, no strange behaviour, install from ubuntu
repositories (Outdated version I KNOW!)
