Thanks for the help so far on finding a keyboard switcher/indicator; I am
still having no luck, but I thought I'd report my rather interesting
findings. I tried scim, and also uim, both of which are able to modify the
keyboard input method just fine, but don't offer simple layout switching (in

I'm afraid that the xkeycaps tool isn't much help. I simply need a way to
switch between multiple keyboard layouts. I am already able to touch-type
on my keyboard using the layouts mentioned above (us,fr,is,el), so I don't
need anything visual or any re-mapping tool, I just need a working

Thanks a lot Teodor.
This is exactly what I have been looking for!
And it seems to work quite well in E17

Hi,
You could try xxkb ... it can stay in the tray and it remebers the

hi,
suppose that there should be the way to control layout policy as well,
but i'm not enlightened enough to show you the example. here's mine
setup (what i see with setxkbmap -print):
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)" };

Btw. is there any way to configure that layout change should be
applied only for the active window?
Thanks

I can't check but if the command 'setxkbmap' exist and works - why not?
There's a limitation however. No more than four layouts could be
specifies at once AFAIK (for a single command). A simple wrapper using
E's (both E16 or E17) keyboard shortcuts easily solve the case.

Hello,
Does anyone here know if this method would work using XiG Accelerated
X-server. I have long needed to be able to find a way to switch between
us, and ua (Ukrainian) keyboard mapping.
Thank you,
matthew

i can suggest the simple old-day well known and well forgotten. let's
say you're using us-ru layouts. just type as an ordinary user:
setxkbmap -layout us,ru -option grp:lctrl_lshift_toggle,grp_led:scroll -variant
winkeys
