Two people (Ignaz Forster & Andrew C Aitchison) kindly suggested that our problem with Firefox ESR 52.3.0 on Xvnc might be due to the fact that Firefox switched from GTK2 to GTK3 when it moved from ESR 45 to ESR 52. Unfortunately, the same problem existed in ESR 45.9.0. (I had decided to retest the issue using ESR 52.3.0 to avoid responses like "go away -- you're using a now unsupported version of ESR".)
So, I'm still looking for ideas, or feedback from anyone who has also seen this problem.
